Brent has a long and varied background in music and his teaching style reflects this. Most students can expect a mix of traditional piano lessons (learning the fundamentals) with contemporary music (students learn best when they’re playing music they enjoy) and supplemental games, worksheets, and exercises.
For beginners, Brent typically uses the Alfred’s Basic piano series as the “meat and potatoes” of lessons. He supplements this with games that help with ear training, music theory, and learning the basics of music and piano.
Brent always provides a fun, relaxed, encouraging learning environment. Kids often make their very own simple song (yes, really!) on the very first lesson.
Lessons are generally once a week, anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. Students age 10 and below generally do best with weekly half-hour lessons. Once we get to ages 11 and up, anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes works well, depending on the student’s skill level, level of interest, and attention span.
Here’s what you or your child can expect to learn:
Music/piano fundamentals:
-How to read music
-Rhythm, harmony, music theory, including chords and scales
-Proper piano technique
-Ear training & how to play by ear
Genre-specific techniques
As Brent has a classical AND contemporary music background (jazz, pop, rock, and more), he is able to teach the intermediate and advanced techniques/concepts of various genres, including:
-Jazz chords, improvisation, and how to read a lead sheet
-How to accompany a singer (whether that’s you or someone else)
-Composition, including music theory, song structure, and more
-Advanced practice techniques
Music production
As Brent has a background in electronic music (primarily EDM- his music can be found on Spotify and Youtube), students have the option to learn electronic music production (Brent specializes in Ableton Live) as well as basic recording and music production techniques.
